Civil society concerned over destruction of Mohenjo-Daro

LARKANA: The civil society leaders and the intellectuals led by Dr. Zulfiqar Ali Chandio, Sardar Ghazi Jarwar, Wazir Ali Shaikh, Aftab Meerani and others took out a protest rally against the provincial government for holding different programs damaging the world heritage site of Mohenjo-Daro.

The rally marched through different routes of the city and staged a protest demonstration outside the Larkana Press Club.

Addressing on the occasion, the leaders said that the funds costing billions endowed by UNESCO and developed countries for the preservation of Mohenjo-Daro have been misappropriated by the Sindh Government. They asserted that holding promotive programs, aimed at hiding poor performance and departmental corruption, have largely resulted in the total destruction of the UNESCO declared world heritage site. They condemned the holding of Sufi Festival, Mohenjo-Daro conference and other programs at the historical site.

On the occasion, they demanded the higher authorities and UNESCO to take notice of the misuse of funds and destruction of the site of Mohenjo-Daro.

“The archeology department is running excavation program only to seek more international funds which will lead to site’s destruction. The site must be reburied to avoid the further damage” they added.
